Down2Earth Interior Design Expands to Phoenix

After seven years with Philadelphia-based design firm Down2Earth Interior Design, Stephanie Ebner made the decision to move to Phoenix, Arizona. When Stephanie discussed this with Amy Cuker, the owner, Amy saw it as an opportunity to expand west. Here, Stephanie shares the journey that brought her to this vibrant desert oasis:

Cycling for Change and Discovery

In 2013, I embarked on a cross-country cycling journey with Bike & Build to support affordable housing. Starting in Providence, RI, we pedaled all the way to Half Moon Bay, CA, volunteering with organizations like Habitat for Humanity along the route.

Discovering Sustainability and Nature in the West

Venturing west for the first time, I quickly fell in love with the captivating outdoor landscapes. It was during this trip that I first encountered straw bale homes—energy-efficient structures using tightly packed straw bales covered in natural plaster. These homes thrive in arid regions like the American Southwest, sparking my passion for sustainable interior design.

From East to West: A New Chapter in Phoenix

On June 6, 2013, my journey west began. Now, a decade later, I am starting a new adventure in Phoenix, AZ. This move coinciding with the anniversary of my westward journey feels serendipitous.

Design Inspirations in Phoenix

Arizona’s rich history and diverse culture offer a wealth of inspiration for interior design. The region’s architecture often integrates natural materials such as adobe, stone, and wood, creating cozy, inviting living spaces ideal for sustainable living. This earthy aesthetic resonates deeply with my design philosophy.

Cultural Influences and Artistic Expression

Moreover, Arizona’s artistic and cultural scene, particularly in Phoenix, is vibrant and diverse. The city’s arts district boasts numerous galleries, museums, and festivals showcasing local talent. From desert-inspired textiles and ceramics to bold Native American motifs, artistic expressions reflect the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Ultimately, from natural influences to cultural richness, Arizona promises to inspire and elevate my interior design work. I look forward to exploring this dynamic region and integrating its unique charm into my design projects in Phoenix and beyond.
